Looking for a job working with horses in southeast Pennsylvania near the Maryland state line? This beautiful 120 acre thoroughbred race horse breeding farm is located in a scenic rural area less than an hour from Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course and less than two hours from Philadelphia. The position is full-time with housing and utilities provided. Paid vacation after one year of work. You will be joining a team dedicated to maintaining a stress-free work environment and home for about 100 horses, mostly broodmares, foals through yearlings, and two top ranking Mid-Atlantic Stallions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of a 4-person team you will care for about 100 horses and maintain the farm land, buildings, and equipment. Three members of the team routinely focus on horse care and assist with farming. The fourth member focuses on farming and assists with horse care. This is not a training or riding position.

Horse Care

Provide daily care, including identification of health issues and proper feeding
Participate in daily chores to include mucking stalls
Handle young horses
Daily exercising of young stock
Handle and halter break foals
Handle stallions and broodmares
Daily exercising
Groom and clip
Sale presentations
Assist up to 6 months of the year with all aspects of breeding and foaling
Stallion handling for live cover
Broodmare management
Foal watch and foaling out
Vet care
Assist with vet work
Give medications and treat minor injuries
Conduct night checks

Farm Maintenance

Groundskeeping
Mow and weed
Mend fences
Minimal landscape maintenance
Building maintenance
Minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs
Painting as needed
Haul hay and horses with a goose-neck trailer.
Operate, repair, maintain and service the farm equipment

QUALIFICATIONS
Experienced foal watch, foaling out, stallion handling, broodmare, and young stock care. Experienced with performance of daily care, including recognition of health issues and proper feeding. Required understanding of daily chores to include mucking stalls, mowing and weeding, mending fence, painting as needed. Handling young horses and stallions helpful. Must have a driver’s license. Pickup truck and trailer driving experience helpful.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Required Experience for Horse Care
3 yrs. experience with broodmare/stallion operation
An aptitude for working with stallions safely
Required Experience for Farm Hand
1 yr. experience farm hand/maintenance

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A high school or college degree is not a requirement for this position, however, a degree does lend strength to your resume. Useful education would include a degree in fields such as Equine Reproduction, Animal Science, or Equine Science. Experience is the best education. Experience is a must.

SKILLS
Patience and caring attitude, willing to work and care for horses as if they were your own. An aptitude for working with foals. Will handle stallions daily so an aptitude for working with stallions safely and with skill a must. Can train some skills, such as AI, injections, clipping etc., however, you need to be experienced in basic horsemanship.
